To upgrade Quickr Server from Entry to Standard, just modify the value of QRD_InstallType in the Notes.ini to be 2 instead of 1.

That is about as simple an upgrade as I could ever imagine.

To me, the status level of Author goes hand in hand with the idea of ownership.  I have always considered the Author of a document in Notes to be the owner of the document at that point in time, regardless of whether or not that person created this particular document.  Author access only works with Author and Reader field values, so I am guess that equivalent field types don't exist in SP.

This idea of Authorship is central to every workflow application I have ever built.  I'll be damned if I am going to "trust" my users to only edit a document when it's their turn in the review cycle.  They are lucky if they can even see things that aren't ready for them to approve/edit.

While SP easily gives you the ability to allow users to edit any document on the site, I couldn't see how to set a user's access to only allow them to edit documents that they have created.  You could modify the rights for a document to only allow specific people to edit the document, but then the connection to the central ACL is severed forever.  The model employed by SP seems eerily similar to the model employed on a file server and we all know how much fun it is when 2 people try to edit a file at the same time.

Now to be totally fair, I only looked at SP for a few minutes, so I might have missed something totally obvious.  The server is currently running WSS, so this might be a feature that you get when you upgrade to MOSS.  Or this might be one of those core Notes features that seems necessary to us, but isn't that important to other vendors.

Will someone who has more experience with SP care to comment and set me straight?

One of the unspecified requirements of the Sametime Entry server is that it requires users that connect to it have that server set as their default Sametime community.  For user's at the client site, it's no big deal since they will probably only connect to their Sametime server.  But it really puts a crimp in those of us trying to add the server as yet another community we are a part of.  In fact, it's doesn't even show up as a choice in the Sametime Default Policy.

And before you very enterprising people try to circumvent things by changing the policy document via the Notes Client, know that I tried it already and it didn't work.  The Sametime server denied all connections once I set the valuer to 0.

I don't expect this issue to be resolved at any time by IBM since this is yet another of my issues that only seems to effect the .0001% of Notes users who are consultants.  Just like my issue with multiple location documents that use different IDs.....but that's a whole different story. 

After much debugging, I determined that the install failed because I had Notes 8.0.1 running at the same time.  After blowing away the configuration and shutting down Notes, I was able to successfully upgrade Aptana to the latest release.

So the lesson learned is to make sure all your Eclipse based applications are shut down before you try to upgrade one of them.

There is one bug that is currently unresolved that I would love some help on.  The crux of the problem is this:  When doing sorting a collection by multiple fields, the secondary sorts are opposite what they should be.  For example, if I want to sort the results by Person in ascending order and then by Date in descending order, the results are return with Person in ascending order and Date in ascending order.  This did not happen when I was using a Bubble Sort, so I must have screwed up something in the Merge Sort code.  If you have experience with these things and want to take a crack at solving the problem, by all means download the latest release and take a look at my spaghetti code.

This position will be primarily responsible for all technical aspects of Lotus Notes application development and application support.  The person in this position will work with other departments in the company and the Manager of Web Development to develop and maintain the technical specifications and all appropriate applications in Lotus Notes.  The position may also include development work in other programming languages.

• Solid understanding of Internet technologies: HTTP, FTP, security and encryption on the Internet, basic networking concepts, etc.

• MergeSort Sorting Routine - all sorts will now be done using a MergeSort function.  Performance of existing reports should be exponentially better, especially when sorting large data sets multiple times.
• Full Text Exports - Regular Exports can now be configured to use either Selection Formulas or a Full Text Search to collect the documents.  Both choices can still be done against multiple databases.

The second thing you were sure to notice was the striking contrast of the driver.  The only child of a psychiatrist mother and pharmacologist father from the central region of Africa, Flagg was as black as a pool of crude oil.  His pearly white teeth were the only part of his body that didn't seem to absorb all light. His skin was flawless and his smile had the ability to disarm his detractors with little effort. In short, he was a walking ebony god.  He was wearing the all black robes of his position of the leader of Le Église du Papillon Blanc Albinos. As a legally registered non-profit church, Flagg's cult was his personal army with which he waged war against his enemies and the authorities were unable to do anything about it.  Of course, that didn’t mean they weren’t trying their hardest to catch him doing something illegal.

His parent's most important contribution before leaving their home country was to develop a method for brain washing people through a combination of drugs and psychological tactics.  The dictator in power, with the help of CIA advisors, was using their procedure to keep the armed forces loyal to him.  Unfortunately for him, his wife wasn’t in the program and had no qualms about stabbing him 25 times after she caught him molesting their daughters.  After his death, they were able to escape the impending civil war by bribing a seat on a freighter bound for Miami.  They were able to smuggle all of their research on a microchip embedded….well, let’s just say that no one looked there.  Unfortunately for them, they both died tragically in a car accident on the night after his 18th birthday. 

The investigators concluded that the husband fell asleep while driving, which caused the car to careen off the cliff and onto the rocks below.  Since there was no reason to expect foul play, the coroner did a cursorary autopsy and sent the bodies onto the crematorium.  Once the bodies had been turned to ash as their recently changed wills expressly proclaimed, there was no way that anyone would be able to find the Obedience in their system.

Unbeknownst to them, Flagg had uncovered their research early in his teenage years.  A genius on any scale, he understood immediately how he could put the methods they developed to good use.  Slowly over the next couple of years, he had implemented the process on them to the point where they would do anything that he asked and think it was their idea.  Like the idea of taking out a $5,000,000 life insurance policy on each of them.  Of course, the policy would pay double in case of an accident.  They both named each other as the primary beneficiary and listed their darling son as the secondary beneficiary on both policies.  When he instructed them to drive the car off the road the day after he turned 18, they had no understanding of what they were really doing.  Even when they were about to hit the jagged rocks at the bottom of the cliff, they had the look of Golden Retrievers who had just been told how good they were.  The money from the insurance policies gave him the nest egg necessary to manufacture Obedience on a much larger scale.

With the increase in purity levels, Flagg was able to grow his empire at a fantastic rate.  After working with a brilliant chemist he “recruited” at college, he was able to turn the oral drug into something that could be administered via aerosol spray.  This way, he was able to convert large number of followers who attended his free seminar entitled “Get Rich Using the Money You Already Make”.  The attendees were administered Obedience from the overhead misting machines that kept the mid-summer’s heat at bay.  After the morning session on the second day, their minds were pliable enough to start indoctrinating them into the cult.  After 3 more days, some were sent back into the world to spread the gospel to their friends and family.  Others simply contacted their company’s and tendered their resignations over the phone or via email.  Then they contacted the financial institutions and transferred all of their worldly possessions over without batting an eye.  Once that was complete, they moved in to one of the ever growing number of cabins and set about providing for Flagg’s every need.

Of course, none of this was on the mind of Flagg at this very moment.  There were only 2 things that occupied his thoughts.  The most important being how to get back his property that was stolen from him.  That’s exactly how he thought of Jennifer, as something he owned.  He had first set eyes on the blonde beauty while she was testifying in front of congress about the exact nature of her father’s business dealings.  After the 4th time she answered a question with “I have no recollection of that, Senator”, he decided that she needed to be taught a lesson of humility.  The fact that Giuseppe’s illegal enterprises were something he wanted for his own was icing on the cake.  Her flexibility in the bedroom was a welcomed surprise and one he intended on enjoying for a long time to come.

The second objective was determining exactly how he was going to kill the man who had stolen her from him.

Albert didn’t recognize the car, but understood immediately that it wasn’t out for a Sunday drive.  Looking around his environment, there didn’t seem to be an easy way out.  That didn’t stop him from hoisting Jenny over his shoulder and running across the road and into the nearby woods.

This time, things were no less comical.  Our nanny, Leslie, had just run outside to get something out of the car when she heard the door close behind her.  Thinking nothing of it, she got the stuff from her car and went to go back into the house.  Unfortunately, when she went to open the door, the knob wouldn't turn.  Staring back at here from the other side of the glass window was Caden, the 2 year old.  Somehow, he had locked the door and locked out Leslie.  No problem, she'll just try the sliding glass door.  That's almost always unlocked.  Survey says.....XXX!  By now, Leslie is totally freaking because the 2 year old she is in charge of is in the house by himself.  He isn't crying, except for when he gets his arms stuck in his coat that he is trying to take off.

So Leslie tries everything she can to get into the house, but has no luck.  So she calls the high school to have Craig sent home immediately to deal with an emergency.  So he gets home and tries the code to get into the garage door.  No luck.  By this time, the Fire Department has shown up after receiving a frantic call from Leslie.  Thinking he has the code wrong, he calls Colette and asks her what it is.  While he's asking her, she hears a bunch of people in the background.  "Yeah, that's the fire department" was what he said in a calm voice.  Of course, that totally freaked Colette out and she calls me to make sure she had the code right. Of course, I was talking with the Ytria folks about their product line.  They certainly got a chuckle out of it. Wouldn't have mattered what the code was because the battery on the remote had died!  So she calls me back to ask me what she should tell them to break to get into the house.

As I am going through my mental list of how much my new windows cost to replace, she gets the good news that the fire department was able to jimmy the front door open without damaging anything.  Leslie rushed into the house only to find that Caden had curled up on the floor and gone to sleep while watching a Baby Einstein DVD. So much for him being totally freaked out.

In the end, the only thing damaged was Leslie's psyche.  Hopefully, that will be the last time something like this happen, but I am not holding my breath.

No more will I have to go searching through my collection of past databases to find that one sort routine that sorts DateTime values.  No I can just include the LSS file and easily select which algorithm I want to use and the type of data being sorted and get my results with no muss, no fuss.  Just the way I like it!

• Traffic to and from the event SUCKED!  It was 40 miles, each way, traveling almost exclusively on highways.  Total time wasted in the car:  2 1/2 hours.  Please, oh please, have the next event near a metro stop.  Even though the commute might be the same or longer for me, I won't blow a vein in my forehead while yelling at the idiot in front of me who doesn't have clue how to merge.
• The Opening Session was just a shortened version of the LS Opening Session, without the female violin player, bad guest speaker, and the really cool light show.  Nothing really new here, but at least it was short.  The Mashups demo was much cooler thank I expected and would really like to see what it takes for developers to allow users to include their applications in a Mashup.  It was definitely eye candy for the CxO level.
• The Desktop of the Future presentation was really good.  It had a couple of graphical slides that did a really good job of categorizing your user base and what functionality they really need.  The slides on everything you need to buy and manage to use Sharepoint were outstanding and very frightening if you think about having to support it.  These slides should be readily available to all IBM/Lotus Sales people who go into competitive bid situations.  Dwight Morse really kept pounding the "at the mercy of one vendor" message when talking abotu MS' collaboration solution.  I can't say I disagree at all, but perception is more important than reality and IBM has to work hard at getting this message out.
• In the "what's old is new" department, it seems that the iNotes moniker will be resurrected for Domino 8.5.  I think it's the right move in the current marketing environment.  Domino Web Access never made much sense to me.
• Sat at the lunch table with Donna Milano, a Marketing Manager for Sametime Unyte.  We had a good discussion about Lotus' presence and possibilities in the SMB market.  She gave me lots of info on ST Unyte and it's pricing structure.  In case any of you weren't aware, it's for online meetings only and doesn't do anything with presence.  It is definitely going head to head with WebEx.  A little later, she was kind enough to give me a demonstration of the Unyte interface and walk me through it's features.  Lotus did a good job of simplifying the interface for end users.  I signed up for a 30 day free trial and will see how the family reacts to the interface.  If the 10 year old can navigate it, then it's definitely been done right.
• I got a chance to meet Heyward Drummond and take a look at the Mac 8.5 Beta running on a MacBook Air as well as DWA on the iPhone.  We talked about the perceived lack of presence on the stage in Cupertino last week, and he indicated that he "thought" it had more to do with MS wanting to be on the stage by themselves than anything having to do with IBM/Lotus.  It seems that Lotus only received the SDK last week (like everyone else) and are still trying to figure out exactly what they are going to do with it.  We both agreed that the logical future step is to have a "Notes Lite" on the iPhone with replication, offline access, encryption, and NSF storage.  Now, that would be something that would make me buy the iPhone.  He also talked about the improvement in performance we should be seeing in the 8.5 client simply from the fact that they will be using an Eclipse version that is 3 or 4 versions ahead of the current 8.0 .1 code stream.  Welcome words to my ears.
• Jerome at the Ytria booth walked me through a quick demonstration of their products.  I kept thinking to myself how much time these things would have saved me over the years if I would have had them.  Hopefully, I will be able to get them into my toolkit shortly.
• Had a discussion with the guy at the Mainsoft booth about the reality of Sharepoint applications vs what MS says can be done.  Basically, he said that Sharepoint is just being used as a document repository and not much more.  That isn't what I call collaboration.  Maintenance, scalability, and management are all real issues that Sharepoint has to solve before it's ready for the big time.  Maybe I should start referring to Sharepoint as a File Server 2.0.
• It was really good to get to see Maurice Cogdell and Debbie Greenburg from IBM.  I have known both of them for quite a long time and it always makes me feel good to have a familiar face in the room.  I caught up with Jack Dausman and promised to make the next DCNUG meeting.
• Stopped by the Hands on Lab, but didn't stay too long as it was really oriented to the end user and not the administrator or developer.  Did get a chance to talk to Jian Shi about some issues I had been experiencing with the ST applet in the Notes 8.0.1 client.  He said he hadn't see the issues I was describing, but said that he would try to go back and do some testing on his own.  The main issues I have been experiencing have been when I change locations that change Notes IDs.  The ST client goes wacky and looks like it loses all it's preferences.  This is quite disconcerting and I said that I would just like clarification from Lotus as to what the expected behavior should be.
• The food at the event was mixed.  The breakfast was pretty well picked over by the time I got there, but the lunch was very good.  Enough choices to satisfy everyone.  The sun-dried tomato pasta was excellent.  There seemed to b a severe lack of chocolate on the dessert table, which was a shame.  And don't even get me started on the rocks shaped like pretzels they tried to make us eat.

All in all, it was definitely time well spent.

If I were able to choose my own music, the choice would be an easy one, albeit not one that would come to mind for everyone.  I didn't choose G 'n R's "Welcome to the Jungle", Metallica's "Enter the Sandman", or Alice in Chains' "Man in the Box".  As much as I love the emotions they evoke, "Gonna Fly Now" (Rocky's theme) and "Eye of the Tiger" from Rocky, "Ride of the Valkyries" from Apocalypse Now, "O Fotuna" from Excalibur, and "Chariots of Fire" are out.

For me, the only choice is Red Ryder's "Lunatic Fringe".  You show me a former wrestler who can listen to that song and not feel the juices starting to flow and I will show you a wrestler who either never saw Vision Quest or was an absolute fish.  Just listening to it makes me want to put on a singlet and smash someone's nose with a good, hard crossface.  Bring it on, Shoot!!!
